Oak Grove Church Road Is A Reminder That New Roads Come At A Price

The bridge on Oak Grove Church Road, just a few hundred yards from Glenn Hi Road, is closing. Winston’s Northern Beltway is slowly becoming a reality.

For a few years now, Kernersville Road and Oak Grove Church Road in the City’s southeast have been hollowed out by the NCDOT. Several homes and many small businesses have been erased from Kernersville Road. A florist shop, two salvage stores, a consignment shop, a produce stand, a furniture store, a hair salon, and a Taekwondo facility have been erased from Kernersville Road.

Where Kernersville Road has lost mostly businesses, Oak Grove Chruch Road, which runs from Kernersville Road to Glenn Hi Road, has seen many of its homes sacrificed for the future Northern Beltway. Complete neighborhoods off Oak Grove Church Road have been seized by eminent domain.

Empty lots along Oak Grove Church Road; reclaimed land that was developed for housing less than two decades ago are a reminder we don’t do an adequate job of planning in this country. If we did, we wouldn’t waste resources building neighborhoods only to destroy them in just as few short years. The Chinese plan decades in advance. In this country, we tend to focus on two and four-year election cycles.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is building a multi-lane freeway that loops around the northern part of Winston-Salem.

The 34.5-mile Winston-Salem Northern Beltway will begin at U.S. 158 southwest of Winston-Salem and end at I-74 southeast of the city.

Over 100,000 vehicles and trucks travel through the area every day, which is more traffic than the roadways in the area are designed to handle. The Winston-Salem Northern Beltway will help alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety along heavily traveled routes in Forsyth County, including U.S. 421/Salem Parkway and U.S. 52.
